Abstract
Deuxième des quatre longs-métrages réalisés par Gainsbourg, Équateur est le seul à s’inspirer d’un roman, Le Coup de lune de Georges Simenon (1933), qui raconte une histoire d’amour dans le Gabon colonial et raciste des années cinquante. Si c’est l’érotisme et la brutalité des relations entre Timar et Adèle qui intéressent avant tout Gainsbourg, celui-ci accorde un soin tout particulier à proposer une vision de l’Afrique s’éloignant des clichés exotiques. Tourné en extérieur, le film baigne dans une atmosphère humide et pesante. Pour son projet, Gainsbourg compositeur s’efface devant Gainsbourg metteur en scène avec une partition musicale très réduite. S’il est bien question d’une vision musicale de l’Afrique, ce n’est pas dans la musique qu’il faut la chercher, mais bien plutôt dans le traitement des voix et des bruits analysés ici en détail. Comme le dit Gainsbourg, « en fait, la musique, c’est le film ».
