Malgré le modèle dominant du Génie dans la pratique artistique et pédagogique de l'écriture pour le théâtre dramatique, le théâtre postdramatique change peu à peu le statut, la matérialité et la fonction du texte et de l’auteur. Le statut d’auteur se disperse, s’ouvrant à divers modèles d’auteur, « de l'auteur à l'auteur-machine ». Elle est de plus en plus déléguée à des co-auteurs humains ou même non humains. Dans une « culture de l'écran », l’auteur en tant que machine ou processeur de données se fonde sur trois principes des « données (é)mouvantes » : la transcodabilité (1) et la « récriture » (2) des données textuelles et la « cinétique » (3) des textes sur scène. Bien que le numérique n’ait jamais été une condition historique de la poétique citationnelle, je me concentrerai sur A Piece of Work (2013), l’adaptation « algorithmique » de Hamlet par la New-Yorkaise Annie Dorsen, où des algorithmes réécrivent le chef-d’œuvre de Shakespeare et le soumettent à un crash test métaphorique.
