Abstract
Abstract Mariachi, one of Mexico’s most recognizable musical traditions and symbols, is often associated with the western state of Jalisco and its capital Guadalajara. In particular, the Encuentro Internacional del Mariachi y la Charrería has actively promoted this association since the early 1990s. Incorporating a combination of archival and ethnographic research, this paper examines the origins of this festival in its first 10 years (1994–2003) as a site wherein notions of race and class were produced, reified, and undermined.
