Abstract
This chapter discusses radiometric terms, solar resources, and solar energy radiation and its parameters including solar azimuth and altitude angle, tilt angle, shadow distances, and row spacing. The study of solar resources provides valuable information about the amount of radiation hit on a photovoltaic (PV) plant site throughout a year. The higher the amount of annual radiation hit on the site, the higher the energy efficiency per kilowatt hour of the PV power plant and the greater the plant revenue. The solar radiation on the earth's surface consists of two components: Direct Normal Irradiance and Diffuse Horizontal Irradiance. For an angled surface solar panel, the amount of total radiation received is expressed by the H G component. Orientation and tilt angle of PV arrays are among the most important parameters that affect the efficiency of a PV power plant.
