Abstract
Over the past two decades, inspired primarily by Bronfenbrenner's (1979) ecological theory of development, research has increasingly demonstrated that aspects of the local community can have a marked impact on child and family wellbeing. With concerns about the disconnect in society and the social milieu in which the next generation are growing up, there have been a range of interventions to make change at the community level. These have been designed to enhance parenting behavior, parental mental health, child academic achievement, and the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people. They include major interventions in the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and the United States, as well as many smaller scale interventions for specific populations. A major focus here is the evaluation of the Sure Start initiative in the United Kingdom. This chapter outlines some of the issues faced by community interventions and explores those that have made headway in establishing a paradigm for positive change.
