Abstract
Plus courant que d’autres imprimés animaliers, le motif léopard est omniprésent dans les modes vestimentaires actuelles et apparaît partout dans notre univers visuel quotidien. De la veste en léopard « de Somalie » de Jacqueline Kennedy, en passant par les bikinis tachetés des pin-ups américaines des années cinquante, jusqu’à la robe clinquante du travesti Divine dans le film Female Trouble de John Waters (1974), cet article propose de suivre la circulation des taches de léopard dans le vestiaire féminin occidental au XXe siècle. D’abord sous la forme de fourrure authentique, importée d’Afrique, qui est utilisée pour confectionner une tenue iconique qui connaîtra un succès retentissant : le manteau en peau de léopard. Puis, sous la forme d’un imprimé industriellement reproduit qui prolifère et apparaît, après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, dans une garde-robe plus populaire. Cette enquête nous permettra d’interroger la représentation problématique des femmes en fauves prédateurs, en panthères.
