In this paper, we propose a new method for designing mm-wave beam steering antennas with dual polarization and 360° azimuth beam steering angular range. To achieve 360° beam steering, we have added several new features to our previous 180° beam steering antennas based on reconfigurable substrate integrated frequency selective structures and PIN diodes. First, transitions from radial waveguides to microstrip lines are designed to feed the radiating elements. Then, the microstrip lines are bent to leave space for RF connectors. In the next step, meander-line microstrips are optimized for equal-phase and equal-amplitude excitations of the radiating elements. Finally, holes are inserted in the printed circuit board in order to place the RF connectors. Based on the proposed design methodology, a dual polarized 360° beam steering antenna operating at 28 GHz is presented. Full-wave simulation results are shown to validate the proposed concept and an antenna prototype was fabricated.
