Abstract
I was told I was born in one of the Gothic towers of the Royal Victoria Hospital overlooking Montreal.A birth in the New World cannot be more Anglo than that.But then I was whisked away, over the mountain, to take up residence in the city of Outremont.It is a wealthy and outré place.Pierre Trudeau, Canada's one colorful prime minister, was raised in a prosperous section of it and attended the Jesuits' Collège Brébeuf nearby.I lived lower down the slope among normal French Canadians and Hasidic Jews.The 1975 film by Ján Kadár, Lies My Father Told Me, tells the story of life in the streets of the plateau.The upper mountain was only for going tobogganing in winter under the Université de Montréal's ski jump.One of Outremont's outer boundaries is marked by the businesses opened up along rue Parc by the Greeks of Montreal.Close by lies Mile End, the district through which immigrants have always passed on their path to upward socio-economic mobility.It is here where, a century ago, Little Italy came into existence.The Italian parish of Notre-Dame-de-la-Défense is its most noteworthy landmark.Montreal's stylish bourgeois-bohemian quarter, Plateau-Mont-Royal, abuts the parish.These were my stomping grounds before I reached my teens.Outremont and its immediate surroundings were dotted with Catholic churches French and English, Anglican churches, Greek Orthodox churches, the synagogues and temples of Orthodox and Reform Jews.Venerable l'église Sainte-Madeleine was the church on our avenue across the street from l'École Lajoie where I went to primary school.The 2011 Quebec film nominated for an Oscar, Monsieur Lazhar, reminds me of school days at Lajoie.Most grade schools were French and Catholic and administered by the Comité Catholique in Quebec City, until the 1960s Révolution tranquille which indeed germinated a revolutionary idea -setting up a governmental Ministry of Education.Where my parents were born, in Poland, a Ministry
