Abstract
Malnutrition and protein-energy wasting (PEW) are nutritional complications of advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) associated with increased risks of mortality, and cardiovascular and infectious morbidity. Patients with >5% weight loss per year prior to starting dialysis are at higher risk of mortality following dialysis initiation. Thus, malnutrition may be a potentially modifiable determinant of the high mortality rate observed in the early period following dialysis initiation. In British Columbia (BC), Canada, a dietitian-stewarded government-funded nutritional supplement policy provides oral nutritional supplements (ONS) to patients based on weight loss and/or low-intake criteria, regardless of eGFR.
