Abstract
Abstract Canada is the world's eighth largest pharmaceutical market (after the United states, Japan, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Spain). Canada's market share has been rising steadily, reflecting sales growth that has outpaced that of other markets. In 2004, Canada's pharmaceutical sales grew 9% (in local currency terms), while sales grew 8% in the United States, 7% in the United Kingdom and Spain, 5% in France, 3% in Italy, and 1% in Germany. We begin this article with an overview of the Canadian health care system and pharmaceutical market. We then focus on drug pricing and reimbursement procedures and provide an update on the cross‐border trade situation. We conclude with a brief assessment of the prospects for change in the Canadian pricing and reimbursement environment.
