Abstract
Film Queer Grit has been screened at national and international film festivals. The work explores a broad range of themes—questions about the Western and the foundational violence that lies at its core—it is interesting to note that it has only been picked up by Queer film and video festivals. In 2004, the Native Women’s Association of Canada launched the “Sisters in Spirit” campaign to call attention to racialized and sexualized violence against Aboriginal women in Canada. The resulting “Commission of Inquiry into Matters Relating to the Death of Neil Stonechild” (Government of Saskatchewan 2004) exposed considerable evidence and forced the Saskatoon police to admit that some of their members had repeatedly transported Aboriginal persons to remote locations in and outside of Saskatoon. The artistic and scholarly process of traveling deep into the violence of Unforgiven, animating own counterwestern Queer Grit , and engaging with various theorists along the way has brought to the edge of a potentially liberatory and revolutionary horizon.
