Abstract
Les Bishnoï sont les membres d’une communauté religieuse fondée au XVe siècle dans le désert de Thar, dans l’État indien du Rajasthan Établie originellement sur 29 préceptes dont plusieurs codifient les relations aux autres vivants, animaux et végétaux, leur doctrine religieuse, le bishnoïsme, prescrit une éthique de vie dans laquelle avoir de la compassion à l’égard de tous les vivants (jīv) et éviter de leur porter préjudice sont des principes primordiaux. Majoritairement agriculteurs, les Bishnoï font face de nos jours à de profondes transformations induites par la modernité et l’intensification de leur agriculture (extension des systèmes d’irrigation, utilisation de machines, d’engrais et de pesticides).À partir d’une étude ethnographique, cet article interroge les dilemmes éthiques et religieux engendrés par l’utilisation de pesticides destructeurs d’organismes vivants. Il rend compte des arrangements à l’œuvre pour concilier des pratiques agricoles nouvelles en contradiction avec des principes fondateurs.
