Abstract
Abstract Folk dance is a contested site. It is often seen as providing cultural unity and keeping memory alive across generations and yet it is also a rich space in which to remix, reinterpret, and re-envision Jewish experience. The two selections in this chapter explore some of the challenges and potential of folk dance, examining the ways in which an embodied repertoire is present on the dance floor. Yiddish dance provides a rare space for individuals and communities to learn about and celebrate Jewish culture in a body-centric way. How can diverse notions of Jewish folk dance continue to provide continuity while making room for changing sensibilities, cultures, technologies, and bodies?
