Le fonctionnement de l’oracle de Dodone reste obscur, mais on lit souvent dans les manuels d’histoire grecque que les pèlerins venaient dans ce sanctuaire épirote consulter la volonté de Zeus en écoutant le bruissement du vent dans le feuillage du chêne sacré. Un examen des sources anciennes révèle toutefois que rien ne vient confirmer cette hypothèse ; cette dernière repose vraisemblablement sur un amalgame entre des témoignages différents. Nous tentons de comprendre ici les raisons de son succès, en orientant l’enquête du côté de l’origine de l’histoire des religions, autour de la dendrolâtrie attribuée aux Anciens, puis du côté du développement d’une forme de sensibilité écologique chez les modernes.
