L’inventaire est un moyen de connaissance et un premier outil de protection du patrimoine. À la suite de la loi modifiant la loi sur le patrimoine culturel et autres dispositions législatives adoptée par l’Assemblée nationale du Québec le 25 mars 2021, les municipalités régionales de comté doivent se doter d’un inventaire des immeubles patrimoniaux situés sur leur territoire, du moins ceux construits avant 1940, l’intégration d’éléments plus récents étant laissée à leur discrétion. Cette date butoir fixée par la loi déprécie l’héritage bâti de l’architecture novatrice du xxe siècle, dont nombre d’éléments furent érigés dans les années 1960, alors que le Québec était profondément transformé par la Révolution tranquille. Les mouvements sociaux que provoquèrent les opérations de rénovation urbaine et leurs démolitions dès le milieu de la décennie et les ratés de certains grands chantiers mettant en œuvre le béton au début de la suivante n’ont-ils pas marqué la mémoire collective, au point d’entacher durablement la valeur culturelle du bâti de cette époque ? Pour répondre à cette question, nous explorons les représentations suscitées par trois cas, la rénovation du quartier Milton-Parc à Montréal, la modernisation de la Colline parlementaire à Québec et la construction du Parc olympique de Montréal pour les Jeux olympiques d’été de 1976.
