Abstract
L’existence du célèbre anatomiste de la Renaissance André Vésale fut entourée d’une aura mystérieuse ; commentateurs et exégètes ont participé à ériger la légende noire d’un disséqueur immoral et vengeur, condamné à l’exil par le Roi Philippe II d’Espagne pour vivisection. Quelque peu tombée dans l’oubli par la suite, la figure du médecin bruxellois connaît un engouement tout particulier au xix e siècle, jusqu’à devenir, près de trois cents ans après sa mort, un personnage de prédilection pour plusieurs écrivains romantiques. L’objectif de cet article est d’interroger la résurgence soudaine de Vésale et, plus encore, les transformations spectaculaires de sa mise en fiction . En effet, nous remarquerons que les différentes perceptions de l’anatomiste suivent les évolutions sociales de l’époque et notamment, celle de la progressive acceptation publique de la pratique autoptique.
