Abstract
Abstract The late Yehudit Arnon’s contributions to the world of dance preceded her tenure as Founding Artistic Director of Israel’s Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company. In the immediate postwar period and in the framework of the Hashomer Hatzair Zionist youth movement, she created Zionist dance works which embodied the spirit of the day and which, at their core, expressed revolutionary ideas about gender and the Jewish body. This chapter examines two such dances and their impact on the identity formation of the Hungarian child Holocaust survivors who performed them. Utilizing extensive archival research, oral history interviews, and reconstruction methodologies, the chapter argues that Arnon utilized her platform of performance to promote the potential of these youths while they rapidly transitioned from their diasporic to Land of Israeli identities.
