Émergeant à la fin des années 1920 et pétris d’une idéologie nationaliste issue du siècle précédent, les premiers romans acadiens trouvent régulièrement leur forme dans un discours historique et ethnographique, comme on le voit dans Elle et Lui d’Antoine-J. Léger (1940). Tout en s’inscrivant dans ces tendances, Pointe-aux-Coques d’Antonine Maillet (1958) propose, dans un récit quasi contemporain à son écriture, une première littérarisation confiante du matériau acadien.
