Abstract
Caratteristiche del panorama culturale romano, le zingaresche sono commediole in versi rivolte a un pubblico popolare rappresentate sia in occasione di celebrazioni cittadine che di festeggiamenti privati. Nonostante godessero di un ampio successo, per molto tempo non hanno beneficiato di un’adeguata attenzione da parte degli studiosi. Il presente contributo si inserisce in una più ampia rivalutazione del teatro seicentesco intrapresa negli ultimi anni dalla critica ed ha come oggetto d’indagine Lo scudo d’oro, ovvero li dui arricchiti di Andrea della Grazia romano, zingaresca che ho recentemente scoperto in un fascicolo della biblioteca dell’Università di Harvard (Houghton Library, *IC6 A100 B670z). Lo scudo d’oro per il suo carattere plurilingue e per la peculiarità dei personaggi rappresentati può essere considerato una significativa testimonianza della Roma barocca, città cosmopolita in cui coesistevano diverse varietà linguistiche e altrettante figure sociali trasposte sulla scena teatrale attraverso le maschere della Zingara, del Norcino e del Giudeo.
