Abstract
\nWilfred Gordon Bigelow nació en Brandon, Manitoba, Canadá\nel 18 de junio de 1913. Hijo de Wilfred Abram Bigelow, doctor\nen medicina -\nfundador de la primera clínica privada de\nCanadá-, y de Grace Ann Gordon, enfermera.\nRealizó sus estudios de grado en la Universidad de Toronto de\nla que se graduó en el año 1938. Inició su residencia quirúrgica\nen el Hospital General de Toronto, donde tuvo la oportunidad\nde tratar a un joven canadiense, en el año 1941, que había\nsufrido una lesión por congelamiento del miembro superior.\nBill (como lo llamaban sus amigos y colegas), se vio obligado\na amputarle al joven todos los dedos de la mano, por\nencontrarse en un estado de gangrena avanzada. Impactado\npor este hecho, por lo poco que se conocía sobre las lesiones\npor congelamiento y estimulado por su profesor inició su\ninvestigación sobre esta entidad.\nEste fue un momento decisivo en su carrera. Poco después el\nDr. Bigelow ingresó al Servicio Militar durante el cual sirvió\ncomo médico del Cuerpo Médico del Royal Canadian Army,\ndonde alcanzó el grado de Capitán, por su destacada labor\ncomo cirujano de guerra. Durante su estancia en el frente\ntuvo oportunidad de tratar a numerosos soldados con lesiones\npor congelamiento, lo que hizo que su interés por la\nhipotermia creciera.\nAl finalizar la guerra regresó a Toronto para terminar su\nresidencia de cirugía, concluyendo su formación con un año\nde entrenamiento en el Hospital Johns Hopkins de Baltimore,\nEstados Unidos de América. En el año 1947 regresó a Canadá\ndonde ocupó un puesto como cirujano en el hospital donde\nhabía realizado sus prácticas iniciales.\n
