Abstract
Multinational corporations based in Europe have accelerated their foreign direct investment in the Southern states of the United States in the past quarter-century. In their home countries, European companies investing in the American South generally respect international norms on freedom of association and collective bargaining. But in their Southern U.S. operations, some companies launch aggressive anti-union campaigns and resist collective bargaining when workers form unions. This is a failure of due diligence for which firms should be held accountable.
