La cuisine, pièce à vivre, est aussi un local technique dont l’outillage reflète l’évolution de l’équipement domestique ainsi que les exigences hygiéniques croissantes. Les journaux illustrés constituent une source inédite pour étudier la réception des innovations technologiques adaptées à l’espace culinaire. Ils proposent non seulement des histoires familiales qui le mettent en scène, mais aussi des articles illustrés sur les salons d’arts ménagers et, depuis les années 1930, des BD publicitaires où les appareils ménagers sont rois. Le fourneau, la cuisinière, le réfrigérateur, appareil genré – dans les images de BD plutôt féminin en France, mais masculin aux USA –, la machine à laver le linge, l’aspirateur, ainsi que le petit appareillage ménager et les ustensiles de cuisine, apparaissent ainsi dans des milliers d’images, allant du début du XXe siècle à nos jours.
