Dans le foisonnement d’institutions internationales fondées au cours de l’entre-deux-guerres, des écrivains et diplomates de plusieurs pays fondèrent une Association internationale des écrivains de langue française. Tendue entre la défense des intérêts professionnels des écrivains et la promotion de la langue française, comme entre la prédominance d’une conception unitaire, centrée sur les normes parisiennes, et la reconnaissance des « autres » littératures écrites en français, cette association fut la première manifestation « francophone » officielle et multilatérale, quarante ans avant l’émergence de la Francophonie.
