GEOPHYSICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF GROUNDWATER FLOW AND SALT TRANSPORT IN AN OIL-SAND TAILINGS POND DAM, ALBERTA, CANADA

Abstract
Geophysical studies were conducted as part of a hydrogeological study on the dam of an active tailings pond at an oil-sand mine site situated in northeast Alberta, Canada. The dam was largely constructed between 1993 and 2002, and is among the largest dams in the world by construction material volume. The tailings pond occupies 25 square kilometers and the tailings dam is up to 40 m high and 1 km wide. Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) is added to recycled water during the bitumen extraction process, which results in sodium rich tailings composed primarily of coarse-grained sediments and water, with some fine-grained sediments and residual bitumen. The process affected coarse tailings are subsequently used as the dam construction material. The flow and transport of fresh and brackish fluids within the dam needs to be understood to properly manage the site, to understand flushing mechanisms and rates for tailings sand, and to design future site reclamation strategies. A series of direct push electrical conductivity, electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and EM38 surveys were conducted between 2001 and 2008. In addition, hydraulic head, temperature, aqueous electrical conductivity, water chemistry and soil-moisture content were monitored along detailed transects from 2002. Geophysical methods clearly image zones of groundwater discharge and flushed portions of the dam. The geophysical results are consistent with the hydrogeologic investigations and provide a more comprehensive picture of the subsurface conditions. The data will be used to help calibrate and validate groundwater flow and transport models.
