Dressant en 1992 le bilan de la recherche sur les sociabilités intellectuelles, Michel Trebitsch attirait l'attention sur « trois aspects de la question trop souvent insuffisamment soulignés : le rapport au politique, la définition des "valeurs" propres aux intellectuels, le poids des représentations 1 », affirmant même quelques pages plus loin : « l'étude des sociabilités ne peut faire l'impasse sur l'histoire des représentations.L'histoire des intellectuels a ses légendes et ses héros, qu'il faut à la fois démythifier et étudier comme formes de mythifications 2 ».Près de quinze ans plus tard, force est de constater que cette invitation n'a guère été suivie.Très peu de travaux, en effet, ont abordé de front les représentations des sociabilités, que ce soit chez les historiens, les littéraires ou les sociologues.Pourtant, l'étude des sociabilités a connu un développement considérable tout au long de cette période, et ce dans les trois disciplines évoquées.Comment expliquer ce point aveugle persistant des recherches ?Quelles voies s'offrent pour ceux qui souhaitent corriger cette lacune ?Quelles références peuvent aider à fonder en théorie l'analyse de l'imaginaire des sociabilités ?Pour y répondre de façon détaillée, il nous faudrait accomplir une histoire sociale et intellectuelle de l'histoire des sociabilités intellectuelles, histoire de second degré exigeant au surplus d'être comparatiste.Cela dépasserait de beaucoup l'objectif premier de ce numéro, qui vise à ouvrir quelques pistes dans ce territoire encombré et méconnu qu'est celui des discours, films, illustrations, mémoires, pièces de théâtre, poèmes, romans et tableaux qui mettent en texte, en scène et en image les interactions intellectuelles.Cependant, pour comprendre ce qui a pu en
