Abstract
The Vikings who raided in the British Isles and subsequently settled there brought with them their ancestral religion, which embodied many myths of gods and other supernatural beings. Narrative treatments of this mythology that originate in Britain and are contemporary with the Vikings are scarce and survive only in a fragmentary and cryptic form. Specific episodes from the mythology, notably the story of Ragnar˛k (Judgement of the Gods), are however attested to in poems that appear to have been composed in the British Isles and also in stone carvings preserved particularly in the north of England. These survivals may evidence an active belief in the mythology on the part of Scandinavian settlers, but it is also possible that the narrative materials became assimilated into the Christian worldview and were treated as pagan foreshadowings of Christian doctrine.
