Abstract
Mountain geomorphology is considered under the headings: definitions, historical, functional, regional, and applied. Historical mountain geomorphology is concerned with evolution over geological time scales. Functional mountain geomorphology examines ways in which contemporary mountain geomorphic systems respond to the major drivers of change, such as relief, hydroclimate, and human activity. Regional mountain geomorphology is exemplified by three typologies which emphasize respectively relief type, hydroclimate, and human activity. Applied mountain geomorphology attempts to understand, predict, and mitigate the impacts of mountain geomorphic processes and to recommend adaptation strategies where appropriate.
