À partir d’une analyse de la pensée de quelques spécialistes (psychiatres, psychologues et psychanalystes), mais aussi de pratiques institutionnelles, ce numéro du Temps de l’histoire tente de repérer les grandes étapes d’un long processus qui a dessaisi le corps judiciaire, puis le corps médical, de l’essentiel du savoir sur les comportements déviants de la jeunesse. Dès les années trente, la recherche en psychiatrie tend à “dénaturaliser” la délinquance juvénile, la psychanalyse opère une première percée dans ce champ en Autriche et la mise en place de l’observation au sein de l’Éducation surveillée après 1945 amorce un processus lent, mais décisif, de psychologisation de la déviance. La multiplicité des grilles de lecture traduit la difficulté d’asseoir les concepts et entraîne des pratiques contrastées, où se télescopent archaïsme et modernité, parfois au sein d’une même institution. Les études réunies ici confirment une chronologie identique dans la plupart des pays occidentaux. Au Québec comme en France, psychiatres d’abord, puis psychologues, imprégnés de psychanalyse, deviennent peu à peu, après la seconde guerre mondiale, les partenaires incontournables du juge et des institutions de protection judiciaire des adolescents. Sur un sujet encore neuf, ce numéro mobilise chercheurs et (anciens) praticiens désireux d’ouvrir des voies nouvelles à la recherche.
