Abstract
Subject Mexican export growth. Significance Mexico saw healthy export growth of 10% year-on-year in 2018, despite uncertainty arising from US-Mexico tensions, domestic political developments and a darkening global economic outlook. The auto sector -- which accounts for around one-third of Mexican exports -- performed even better, with 19% growth, seeing Mexico surpass Canada to become the world’s fourth-largest car exporter. Impacts With new auto sector rules still more than a year away and uncertainty around the globe, manufacturers will be in no rush to leave Mexico. The revamped TPP-11 trade deal, and new trade agreements with Argentina and Brazil, offer Mexico a chance to diversify export partners. A new law on unions and a pro-labour president may foreshadow growing labour tensions in Mexico in the coming years.
