Abstract
The Magdalene asylums were houses of refuge used to treat wayward women and “save” them from promiscuity, pregnancy out of wedlock, and prostitution. Operating from the 1700s to the late 1990s throughout Australia, Europe, Canada, and the United States, the institutions were named after Mary Magdalene, a figure in Christianity purported to be a reformed prostitute who traveled with Jesus and his followers. Allegations of horrible conditions of confinement and abuse by the nuns and other staff running the asylums led to investigations and the shuttering or transformation of the facilities by the late twentieth century.
