Wetland soils experience prolonged saturation. This situation causes persistent anaerobic conditions that affect soil biogeochemistry and a suite of common features and processes, including accumulation of soil organic matter, development of redoximorphic features, and redox reactions contributing to emissions of greenhouse gases. Wetland soils, also known as hydric soils, are at the interface between food security and water security and as such, need to be carefully considered in efforts to model effects of land‐use and climate change.
