This chapter considers the combined effect of two perpendicular fields, one a static field and the other a much smaller radiofrequency (rf) field. The motion of a magnetic moment immersed in these fields is analyzed by the use of a rotating reference frame defined in terms of the frequency of the harmonic field. It is shown that the magnetic moment is most efficiently rotated away from the static-field direction when the frequency of the rf field matches the Larmor precessional frequency, a resonance condition. The chapter describes the effect of adding other magnetic fields. It discusses the combination of a rf field perpendicular to a much larger constant field.
