Abstract
The relatively secure dates of the milestones found so far prove that the roads in the Cilician plain were expanded from the middle of the 2nd century onwards. Up until the fall of the Parthian Empire in 224 CE, expansion and maintenance of the road network in Kilikia Pedias were intensified due to the increasing campaigns against the Parthians, because the state of these main routes for the movement of troops to the front were strategically crucial for the fate of the Roman Empire. This construction activity continued after the founding of the Sassanian Empire in the year 224 CE until the raid by the Sassanian king Sapor I. in 260 CE. The road network saw its next phase of renewal only after the devastation of urban life in the first quarter of the 4th century as a result of the increasing military activity against the Sassanians during the first tetrarchy, when Diocletian carried out administrative, economic, political and military reforms throughout the empire.
