Abstract
Regional activities relevant to Arctic environmental protection occurred primarily through the Arctic Council. With no ministerial meeting of the Council scheduled for this past year, regional co-operation was furthered through meetings of the senior Arctic officials (SAOs), the work of two task forces, efforts of the Council’s six working groups, and an Arctic environmental ministers meeting (documentation from the SAO meetings and working groups may be found at the Council’s website ( )). Other international activities of note occurred under the auspices of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the Barents Euro-Arctic Council, and the Conference of Parliamentarians of the Arctic region. In March, Canada hosted a meeting of foreign ministers from the five Arctic Ocean coastal states to discuss emerging issues and future co-operation. On 15 September, the foreign ministers of Norway and Russia signed a Treaty on Maritime Delimitation and Cooperation in the Barents Sea and the Arctic Ocean.
