FigureJonathan Borak, MD, and Sidney Siu, MD, received the designation of Fellow from the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA). Drs Borak and Siu join a select group of physicians—only three other ACOEM members (Mitchell Zavon, MD; Lawrence Betts, MD; and the late W. Clark Cooper, MD)—have held fellowship in both the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM) and AIHA. Drs Borak and Siu were elevated to AIHA fellowship at the recent American Industrial Hygiene Conference and Exposition held in Indianapolis, Ind. Dr Borak is Clinical Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health and Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at Yale School of Medicine, a member of the Yale Occupational and Environmental Medicine (OEM) Program, and president of Jonathan Borak & Company, an OEM consulting firm in New Haven, Conn. Dr Borak is on the editorial board of the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (JOEM) and serves as its book review editor. He received his MD from New York University School of Medicine and is a diplomate of the American Board of Preventive Medicine in occupational medicine, the American Board of Internal Medicine, and the American Board of Toxicology. He is also certified in internal medicine by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Dr Borak has been a member of ACOEM since 1987 and was elevated to fellowship in 1993. He is a member of the Council on Public Affairs and the Council of Scientific Advisors (CSA) after having chaired CSA for 10 years. Dr Borak was a member of the board of directors from 1999 to 2002 and has served on numerous additional councils and committees. He received the 2004 Robert A. Kehoe Award of Merit, the 2003 Kammer Merit in Authorship Award, the 1996 Meritorious Service Award, and is a three-time recipient of the ACOEM Presidential Award—2008, 2002, and 1994. He is a member of the New England COEM component and is a past president of his former component, OEMA of Connecticut. Dr Siu is medical director at SRS Consultants Inc, in London, Ontario, Canada, and is Adjunct Professor, Department of Medicine, at the University of Western Ontario, also in London. He received his medical degree from the University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Dr Siu is certified by the American Board of Preventive Medicine in occupational medicine and by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene. He is also certified in occupational medicine by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and is a Fellow of the Canadian Board of Occupational Medicine. Dr Siu became an ACOEM member in 1992 and received his fellowship designation in 2003. He has served on the Occupational and Environmental Infectious Diseases Committee and is a member of the Ontario Society of OEM, an ACOEM component society. Judith Green McKenzie, MD, MPH, FACOEM, of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Philadelphia, Pa., has been appointed to the editorial board of JOEM. Dr McKenzie is also associate professor of Emergency Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Department of Emergency Medicine, Division of Occupational Medicine, and has been affiliated with the University since 1995 in both teaching and administrative capacities. She earned her medical degree from Yale University School of Medicine and her MPH from Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health, Baltimore, Md., and is certified by the American Board of Preventive Medicine in occupational medicine. Dr McKenzie has been a member of ACOEM since 1996 and earned the designation of Fellow in 2003. She is a member of the Council on Education and Academic Affairs, the Occupational and Environmental Medicine Competencies Task Force, and serves on the Advisory Panel for the upcoming 2013 American Occupational Health Conference. She has served as panel co-chair for the Hip and Groin Disorders chapter of ACOEM's Occupational Medicine Practice Guidelines and as a reviewer for JOEM. Dr McKenzie is a member of the Pennsylvania Occupational and Environmental Medical Society, one of ACOEM's component societies. Daniel G. Samo, MD, FACOEM, Medical Director, Division of Health Promotion and Corporate Services at the Northwestern Memorial Physicians Group (NMPG), Chicago, Ill., received the Central States Occupational and Environmental Medicine (CSOEMA)'s National Leadership Award at their annual spring meeting at which Dr Samo's presentation on March 16 was entitled “Public Safety Guidance: Why, How, and What's New.” The Leadership Award is bestowed on an individual who has provided outstanding service in a field relative or beneficial to occupational medicine. Dr Samo has been instrumental in the initial and continued development of Guidance for the Medical Evaluation of Law Enforcement Officers (LEOs), ACOEM's on-line resource that provides physicians who treat LEOs with the information needed to make the best medical qualification recommendations that promote the utmost in health and safety of LEOs, and is involved with firefighter physical requirement determination contributing to the standards currently in use today. Dr Samo is assistant professor at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and the director of NMPG Public Safety Medicine. He is also a principal member of the National Fire Protection Association Technical Committee on Fire Service Occupational Safety and Health and a partner in INSPE Associates, a medical legal consulting firm. Dr Samo received his medical degree from Chicago Medical School, Chicago, Ill., and is certified in emergency medicine by the American Board of Emergency Medicine. He joined ACOEM in 1986 and was elevated to Fellow status in 2002. Dr Samo was instrumental in founding ACOEM's Public Safety Medicine Section and has served as its chair for the past 15 years. He has also served on the Sensory Perception Committee, the Council on Special Occupational Health Interests, and as a Section Delegate to the ACOEM House of Delegates. Dr Samo was the recipient of ACOEM's Innovation in Occupational and Environmental Health Grant awarded to him and Evanston Northwestern Healthcare Foundation and the Village of Glencoe in 2004 for their work related to public safety medicine. ACOEM's Commercial Driver Medical Examiner (CDME) Course will be held on September 28, 2012, at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown Hotel, Philadelphia, Pa. Led by Dr Natalie Hartenbaum, this course has been updated to meet the core curriculum requirements for medical examiner training in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Upon satisfactory completion of this course, those eligible to serve as examiners would be prepared and able to sit for the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners (NRCME) certification examination. Although content from the FMCSA's Medical Examiner Handbook on how to conduct a physical examination and details on diagnosis and treatment of specific medical conditions will be included in before and after reading material, the expectation is that participants have already mastered physical examination, diagnosis, and treatment skills during their health care training and the emphasis will be on those issues specific to the commercial driver. The CDME Course will also be offered on November 9, 2012, in Atlanta, Ga., and on March 8, 2013, in Los Angeles, Calif.
