Abstract
Snow is falling again, sharp and insistent, but Caleb hardly notices. Yesterday a blizzard closed all the schools and shops in Morrow’s Cove. In north-western Newfoundland, even in late March, winter still seems endless. Spring is a long way away, perhaps won’t arrive till the summer. Some years, spring doesn’t arrive at all. Winter eventually ends in late May or early June, and summer starts immediately. Caleb usually likes winter, especially likes to pit himself against the bitter, relentless wind.
