Abstract
Female victims are often called to testify in court about violence perpetrated against them. The victim's gender, race, and even her physical attractiveness can influence jurors' perceptions of her testimony and subsequent evaluation of the defendant's guilt. The limited research on the impact of victim gender on jury decision making has primarily focused on the influence of this extralegal factor in capital cases and in domestic violence, rape, or sexual assault cases. Generally, research has found significant, though varying, effects of victim gender on jurors' legal decisions and verdicts.
