Abstract
Nonfiction prose was not invented in the Victorian period, but it proliferated, flourished, and developed new generic and discursive forms and qualities within the growing complexity of Victorian society and its new technologies of textual dissemination. Victorian nonfiction prose taught, expressed, critiqued, and entertained new readers via a multifaceted infrastructure of publishing formats and venues, namely the significant proliferation of affordable books and periodicals. Some key genres of the period were reviews, essays, and other journalistic forms, philosophy, political economy and social criticism, sage writing and religious texts such as sermons, multiple forms of lifewriting, works of history, travel, science, and various specialized modes of academic writing.
