Abstract
Les entrepreneurs hollandais, initialement aids par de gnreuses subventions gouvernementales, ont cr au dix-neuvime sicle un certain nombre de compagnies spcifiquement pour la pche la baleine et au phoque, mais ces industries n'ont jamais prospr. La difficult tait un manque d'esprit d'entreprise et de bonne volont d'innovation plutt qu'une pnurie de finances. Les pcheurs la baleine, tant anglais qu'cossais, allemands, et, particulirement, norvgiens ont fait la transition de la voile la vapeur beaucoup plus tt que le Nerlandais qui se sont raccrochs bien trop longtemps l'ide que la technologie et les mthodes des dix-septime et dix-huitime sicles taient encore applicables l'industrie de la pche la baleine du dix-neuvime.
