A Review Focus Issue on atrial fibrillation is scheduled to appear in March, 2011. Atrial fibrillation is an area of enormous clinical relevance. Driven by this clinical importance, unmet therapeutic needs and rapid progress in basic research technology, enormous advances in understanding the molecular basis of the arrhythmia have occurred over the past few years. This Review Focus Issue will contain a number of important cutting-edge reviews addressing the role of genetic background, microRNA, atrial fibroblasts, key ion channels and the spatiotemporal organisation and dynamics of tissue conduction in arrhythmia development and the potential therapeutic implications.
