Abstract
After an initial period of conflict over the very idea of globalization, scholars, policy makers, businesses and political activists have all begun the more arduous task of confronting the complexities of this multidimensional process. That globalization is not a passing fad is by now abundantly clear. It does take many forms, however, and affects countries, regions, economic sectors and groups of people in different ways. Globalization means different things to poor and rich nations, to progressives and conservatives, to social scientists and moral philosophers, to technocrats and citizens. All these distinct dimensions and differentiated meanings must be carefully distinguished and analysed. And yet, they also overlap and interact in puzzling ways, challenging established norms and theories, and giving rise to emergent structures and values.
