Abstract
Our definition of a dynamical system is that it is a set of entities which evolve and interact as time progresses. From a mathematical viewpoint, this idea is formalized in terms of mappings between functions of time: The domain of a map in this class corresponds to the set of system inputs (and, possibly, initial internal states), and the range corresponds to the set of system states and outputs. A notable feature of this idea is that it implies any interlinked set of systems is itself a system when the (inter-)linking of two systems is formalized as the identification of a subset of the output variables of one system with a subset of the input variables of the other, and vice-versa. (See Zadeh and Desoer [1963, Chapter 1, Section 9] for a discussion of this construction.)
