Significance That might mostly be jockeying in a dispute over electricity price rises with the state-owned power supplier. In contrast, Vedanta Resources, one of the leading players in Zambia’s copper industry, plans to quadruple its copper output over the next three years and said late last month that its Konkola Underground and Nchanga Open Pit projects had improved integrated production by 9% quarter-on-quarter. Despite growing political instability, increasing global demand and a resultant positive price outlook for metals and minerals are likely to buoy Zambia’s mining prospects. Impacts Copper output increases are unlikely to improve prospects for diversified growth unless fiscal management improves. Mining policy instability will reduce appetite for foreign direct investment in sectors that depend on the mining industry. IMF budgetary support is necessary, but could encourage authoritarian consolidation and undermine investor confidence.
