E ach issue of the Journal in this landmark year will contain an abstract or excerpt from an early volume.These flashbacks will highlight the changes over the last 50 years in psychiatry or, conversely, the perseverance of issues and concerns.The first excerpt is from the 1956 Sigmund Freud Memorial Address presented to the Montreal Medico-Chirurgical Society and published in the first volume of the Journal.Written with the emphasis of the day, as implied in its title, these are the paragraphs that express considerable concern with preservation ofthe personal aspects ofcare, with closer ties with medicine and with attention and respect for the patient.These were issues then, and they remain or are even of greater concern today.
