Abstract
The role of physical and cognitive disability in Victorian literature is examined here in its historical context. Although the Victorians would not have used the term “disability,” they were fascinated with physical and cognitive difference. Victorian novels, in particular, are populated by characters with disabilities and their presence had varying purposes and effects. For instance, some characters with disabilities were represented as saints, and others as villains, and often these characters were meant to evoke emotional responses in readers.
