Abstract

Intracorporeal laser lithotripsy utilizes the power of lasers to fragment urinary calculi. The physics of two main laser–target interaction mechanisms involved in laser lithotripsy (photomechanical and photothermal) are summarized and compared. Photothermal Holmium:YAG laser lithotripsy is considered as the current gold standard modality. The ablative properties, optimal power settings, and optical fiber properties of Ho:YAG laser lithotripsy are reviewed. Finally, we briefly introduce other laser candidates for laser lithotripsy which potentially provide higher ablation efficiency.
