Abstract
Abstract People adjust their vocabulary, sounds, and syntax depending upon who they are speaking to and the circumstances of the conversation. For instance, sales representatives talk about “automobiles” in the showroom but about “cars” with their neighbors, and they enunciate when reporting to their managers in ways that would seem stilted if they spoke that way to their friends after work. Such adjustments are linguistically subtle and socially meticulous and largely automatic. They are not taught or consciously learned, but are part of the innate linguistic competence of all normal people.
