Abstract
The last three years in the Kenyan theatre scene have been invigorating. It was hosted by Kenya Drama Theatre Education Association (KDEA) and featured various performances, among them Fruit for Thought directed by Emerencia Emerita of Canada, and Song of Lawino, directed by Jacob Otieno and performed by Free Travelling Theatre(FTT). The visiting British group Theatrum Botanicum was hosted by various Universities, the British Council and the Kenya National Theatre during its countrywide tour from 20-27 June 1998 of An African Julius Caesar after William Shakespeare, directed by Toby Gough. Also this year, Phoenix Theatre, a leading professional theatre group, commissioned a Kenyan playwright&s;s work for the first time. It is held at all levels from zonal to national and rotates every year between the eight provinces of Kenya. The Christian theatre scene is marked by various church theatre groups performing vigorous plays; it climaxes every year with the Mavuno Drama Festival in August.
