Les gouvernements et les parlements se trouvent au centre de la vie publique et politique. Réussir à y instaurer l’égalité entre les sexes est une première étape cruciale pour faire en sorte que les politiques et les budgets publics tiennent compte des points de vue et des intérêts des femmes aussi bien que de ceux des hommes. En adoptant les Objectifs de développement durable (ODD) de l’Organisation des Nations Unies (ONU), les pays se sont engagés à établir l’égalité entre les sexes parmi les dirigeants politiques. Or, le renforcement de la représentation des femmes en politique se révèle faible sur les 15 dernières années, les femmes restent sous-représentées dans les ministères et elles occupent à peine un tiers des sièges dans les chambres basses des parlements de la zone OCDE, en moyenne. Pour tendre davantage vers une pleine participation des femmes à la vie politique en qualité de dirigeantes, il faut que les pouvoirs publics réagissent de façon globale et coordonnée en dépassant les mesures qui ciblent les femmes en tant que groupe sous-représenté en politique.
