Abstract
Kawasaki described the acquired heart disease in Japanese children in 1967: “What may be a new disease has been afflicting infants and young children in Japan since 1960. The first report on mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome (MLNS) was made by one of us (T. K.) in 1967 based on his experience of 50 cases with this condition” (Kawasaki et al. 1974 ). The major cardiac lesion is an inflammatory reaction of the walls of arteries, a vasculitis , and most dangerous is vasculitis and aneurysms of the coronary arteries. It is the leading cause of acquired heart disease in children. The condition is also termed lymph node syndrome, mucocutaneous node disease, and infantile polyarteritis. McCrindle forwarded an editorial. Systemic vasculitis occurs with a predilection for small- to medium-sized arteries, particularly the coronary arteries.
